When Emmanuel Nkuna, Ophile Segau and Anele Kunene enrolled for Leadership 2020’s I Was Born to Speak on Radio training programme, all they wanted was an opportunity to learn about radio from the best in the industry. Little did these young people know that their leap of faith would culminate in a 3-hour magazine show, simulcasting on Massiv Metro and HOMEGROWN Radio. The trio will be joined by fellow I Was Born to Speak on Radio graduates, Mandisi Mabaso, Nozzy Nkutha and Tshepo James, who will be working as Producers.
Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity granted to him, Emmanuel – otherwise known as “Smarts”, had this to say; “Thank you to all the leaders, I’m grateful for the opportunity. We’ve been given a chance, but more than anything, this is an opportunity for us to grow even beyond radio.” His sentiments were echoed by all the aforementioned recipients of this rare opportunity.
Christened the HOMEGROWN Experience, this is an opportunity given to the rising stars to hone their skills and put their talents to the test by having their radio debut broadcast not only on the new HOMEGROWN Radio as expected, but also to the wider audience of the well-established Massiv Metro. All this began as an invitation to the students of I Was Born to Speak on Radio to pitch a show for HOMEGROWN Radio, which resulted in the six individuals selected and, true to Leadership 2020 form, encouraged to work as team.
Announcing the names of students who made the cut, Leadership 2020’s Nicolas Regisford congratulated the budding broadcasters and emphasised the importance of teamwork and being there for each other, working with love and care. He concluded with these words of encouragement to all the students; “We are all stars in here. Some of us need polishing, some of us need to stand up and be seen. I encourage you to not sit on your talent – use it with purpose.” The students were happy to learn that this was not the last HOMEGROWN Experience. This, and similar opportunities, will occasionally present themselves, but only deserving candidates will seize them. It all depends on how bad they really want it.
